Trying to think of a unique birthday party idea for your child?
The other day we told you about the newest type of birthday party to throw for your child: a Charity Birthday Party…
As a change of pace, you can focus the party less on gifts and more on spending quality time with the people your child loves.
So once your child has decided (and accepted) that he or she won’t be receiving that many gifts this year, here are 6 more unique ideas to integrate meaningful fun with the idea that gifts don’t make a party….
1. Animal Theme
Let the guests know that this year the gifts won’t be for the birthday boy/girl. Instead, have each guest bring a present for an animal, like a dog or cat or bunny. Everyone can visit a local animal shelter to see that their toys will be going to those that really need them.
2. Book Exchange
Instead of random gifts, have everyone bring books; and instead of giving all of them to the birthday kid, hold a book exchange so that everyone gets something.
3. Special Request Gift Theme:
Does your child collect anything? If so, have the guests bring gifts that have to do with the collection. This way, the birthday kid will have much more use for the gifts.
4. Gift Exchange
Similar to a book exchange, but with gifts. Who says you have to wait ’til the holidays to exchange gifts?
5. 2 Special Choices
Let your child decide between spending his or her birthday at one big event with one friend, or one smaller party with many friends. Since your child is the one making the decision, he/she will be less likely to get upset.
6. Memory Book Page
This is kind of like scrapbooking, except with this idea, each person creates his or her own page. Once everyone is done, you can collect all the pages to put into one big book. Toys are ephemeral, but good memories will last.
Have you tried any of these birthday party ideas geared toward 8-10 year-olds, and how did the party turn out? Do you have any other ideas that you could share with a parent whose child is soon having a birthday party and wants to do something unique? Share them in the comments below…

I guess it is the climate of society now, but i think it is sort of cruel to ask your child to not accept gifts for their birthday. there is so much pressure on children today to act more adult. this is simply because their parents are so lazy and unyeilding to the idea that kids need to be kids.
They cant celebrate holidays collectively, they have to trick or treat in the daylight, they are forced to be fashion forward, and the school day is longer but the education has totally degenerated. Let them keep their birthday presents, and just be good parents who teach their children to be loving, accepting and generous all year long.
