A 5-Letter Word That Prevents Sibling Rivalry

Are your kids constantly upset with each other?

Are your kids constantly upset with each other?

You hear the screeches and yelling from the other room. It must be your kids getting into it with each other.

“What are they fighting about *this* time,” you wonder? And why does it keep happening no matter what I try?

According to parenting expert, Michele Borba, what you need is a simple 5-letter word to smooth things out:

RULES

When you get house rules in place, you can prevent most of the sibling rivalry issues before they start.

Think this list of 5 rules would work in your house?

  1. No yelling.
  2. No taking without asking.
  3. No hurtful behavior.
  4. No involvement without evidence.
  5. No tattling.

Usually when it comes to kids, it’s better to focus on what you DO want your kids to do. Why? Because rules that have NO in them don’t model what your kids should do instead.

So if you’re going to use these rules from Borba’s Big Book of Parenting Solutions, be sure to let your kids know what they should do instead of all those things on the house rules list.

This is especially important with younger kids, but even older kids can use the reminder of what to do instead of yelling, or what to do instead of tattling.
