A Reason to Know Your Neighbors

When you see your neighbors outside, do you talk to them?

Have you read The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold?

I won’t spoil it for you, but basically it’s a story about a young girl named Susie Salmon who was raped and murdered by her neighbor.

That doesn’t sound too far-fetched from what could happen in real life, which is the scary thing.

Parenting has changed a great deal over the past 4-5 decades or so. With new inventions and changing times come new problems and new ways to deal with those problems. The term “helicopter parent” accurately describes some of you. We are much more over-protective of our kids. But that’s only because there’s more reason to be.

When it comes to dealing with strangers (or even neighbors!), teach your kids the appropriate ways to talk to them. You can refer to our past article on dealing with strangers. You don’t want your child to end up like Susie Salmon!
