Most parents complain that their kids watch too much TV…

But part of the reason they think that is because of the types of TV programs their kids and tweens are watching.

They’re watching mind-numbing cartoons, music videos, or teeny-bopper programs with little educational value, if any.

But there are so many great programs out there that can actually help your kids and tweens learn things while also getting the enjoyment of watching TV.

Here are some of the great programs you can watch with your kids to make sure they’re watching the right kind of television…

DISCOVERY CHANNEL

  • Dirty Jobs: A guy visits people around the world who have the dirtiest, messiest, grossest jobs so that we can learn what it’s like.
  • Myth Busters: Two super-handy guys set out to see if myths and rumors are true by recreating the science experiments to test them out.
  • Shark Week:  Need I say more? This week-long series is fascinating with the science, biology, physiology, and near-death experiences. Hard to stay away from. Might want to record it and watch it during the day (not right before bed!)
  • Man Vs. Wild: All about a guy named Bear who is out in the wilderness surviving on the land, eating what he can, and dealing with the different elements that make life out in nature interesting.

TRAVEL CHANNEL

  • No Reservations &  Bizarre World – Travel the world and see all the different (totally bizarre) things that people eat. Sometimes gross, and most kids will LOVE it.

HISTORY CHANNEL

  • The Universe: A new program on the History Channel all about outer space. Cool!
  • Modern Marvels: Explores how products and devices are made and what they’re used for

Is this to say that it’s not okay to let your kids watch cartoons and mindless TV programs?

No way.

But you might consider having a healthy balance in your kids’ and tweens’ TV viewing habits.

If your kids are watching 30 minutes of cartoons, make sure they also watch one of these educational programs with you.

It’s a great time to bond with your kids and tweens, and you’re also bound to have some really good conversations about the programs too.
