Did you know that even your baby's crib needs to be babyproof?

As a parent, there’s nothing more fragile than your newborn baby.

So it’s important that you have your home baby-proofed before bringing your new baby home.

You can’t be too careful with these things, and you’ll feel much better knowing that you’ve taken extra measures to making sure your home is not only welcoming, but safe.

For newborns and infants under 3 months, making sure that your baby is sleeping in a safe place is crucial.  Below are some tips to make your baby’s crib is a safe, warm, and welcoming place to sleep.

  • Make sure that the crib is sturdy. If you’re absolutely sure that you’ve assembled it correctly, it’s probably worth paying to have it professionally assembled. You don’t want the crib to collapse while your baby is in it.
  • In case of a fall, place some sort of cushion under the crib. Parenthood.com says to place a rug underneath, but I’d take that even further and place a foam mattress or something to support a fall better.
  • Those stuffed animals you saw at the store may be cute and cuddly, but never put them in a crib. Not even pillows, soft bedding, or heated blankets and pads. It may not seem obvious, but your baby may suffocate.

For babies that are Four Months to One Year old (or until your baby is walking), make sure that the areas outside of the crib is safe for babies.

  • Never leave loose change or small items on the floor where your baby may pick it up and eat it…
  • If you are storing your child’s toys in a trunk or case of some sort, make sure there are enough holes in it so that in case your child gets trapped, he or she can breathe.  Drill more breathing holes if you have to.
  • Use twist ties to wrap any cords around the house to a shorter length so that your child doesn’t pull on them.

It’s time to change those messy habits if you have any, for everyone’s sake.
