Teachers are very special. Here's how to make sure you give your child's teacher something he or she won't be inclined to regift.

The holidays are here, and as you’re adding to the list of gift recipients for this year, consider jotting down your children’s teachers.

It’s the least you could do, considering teachers spend a great deal of time with your kids.

Now you may not know enough about your kids’ teachers, but don’t start pulling out those old gifts from last year that you never used. Teachers deserve a little more than a recycled gift.

Some believe the best gift you could give a teacher is time. But you can’t directly give time, so work around it.

Have your kids spend some of their time to make their teachers a handmade gift. There are few things better than sincere gratitude, and even a home-made card or letter with a few words of gratitude can be more than enough.

There’s something about a letter that allows the writer to express what they can’t say aloud. It’s meaningful, thoughtful, and can say pretty much say anything that any ol’ store-bought gift can’t.

If you’re the sort who enjoys buying gifts instead, here are some ideas:

  • Gift certificates to: a spa or salon – because even teachers need to relax
  • Books – a gift card will do, but if you’re feeling confident get the book
  • Donate money in honor of the teacher to a not-for-profit organization of the teacher’s choice
  • Gift cards for: restaurants, office supply stores

And here’s what NOT to get: candles and/or lotion – teachers have admitted that they re-gift those things.

Whatever you and your children decide to do for their teachers, remember that it’s the thought that counts. Cliche, but true…and something teachers will be sure to appreciate your kids for that.
