Blame Barbie

by Hong Kong Tran

What are you daughter's Barbie dolls teaching her?

Kids these days are growing up faster and faster. By growing up I mean doing things like dressing trendier, wearing make-up, and getting boyfriends, all at earlier ages.

Does this come as a surprise to you?

A blogger on Single Mom Survives tells a story of something that her daughter did in front of her dad who was on the Webcam when it happened, which makes you question why she did that…

She lifted her shift and with the boisterous excitement that only a four year old can harness said “look at my boooooobies!!” Now this would have been cute had she not done it on video. Live video. Web cam live video being shot across the time space continuum to her dad.

This particular mom blames Barbie for her daughter’s disturbing, grown-up behaviors. Traditional Barbie dolls don’t talk–these kids are using their imaginations to role play, so they must be getting that material from somewhere else. I think if I had to blame something, it would have to be the media. So much emphasis is placed on material things these days, and the images on young girls’ magazines suggest being thin and having layers and layers of make-up is the way to get attention.

What do you think is to blame? Is it really Barbie’s fault? Do your kids even play with Barbies anymore?
