Parents are learning new things about the do's and don'ts breastfeeding and bedsharing..
According to a blogger for Breastfeeding Moms, breastfed babies wake more frequently because breastmilk gets digested more quickly. So moms tend to give babies formula so that their babies could sleep longer.
Some mothers advocate breastfeeding, and here are some of the reasons why:
- To let your body know to replenish breast milk for the next day
- To protect your babies from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
Breastfeeding often accompanies bedsharing.
When we nurse [babies] back to sleep, not only are we satiating their hunger, we are letting them know that they are safe and that their cries will be heeded. We are building a trusting connection with our babies based on respect and responsiveness.
Moms build a special kind of connection with their babies in breastfeeding and bedsharing.
If you’re going to have the baby sleep with you, here are some tips to stay safe:
- Breastfeed your baby – those who breastfeed are less likely to go into deep sleep…this way you can be more attentive to your baby
- Place your baby next to Mom, not in between Mom and Dad
- Don’t let the baby sleep with babysitters or siblings – only primary caregivers
