As you start getting your house ready for Christmas, make sure everything is safe for your kids.

As you get ready for a holly jolly Christmas, it’s easy to focus your attention on all the fun and joy of the holiday season and overlook one of the main priorities: safety.

What with all the shiny decorations and lights and presents, it’s not hard to see why the holidays are as dangerous as they are jolly when it comes to toddlers.

Because let’s face it, if your kids aren’t safe and they wind up getting hurt or are in danger, (especially from something that you could have prevented) that’s not going to be fun at all.

Here are some things to consider and keep in mind when you are decorating. It won’t take long to make sure your house is set up for a safe Christmas holiday:

  • Trees – Make sure fake trees are flameproof. Make sure that real trees are fresh so that the needles don’t fall off the branches. Not only are the needles sharp, but they’re a bigger fire hazard when they’re dry.
  • Lights – Don’t put electric lights on metallic trees. And, yes, the Christmas lights can be very pretty, but turn them off when you go to sleep or leave the house – you’d be saving electricity and preventing a fire if the lights decide to short out.
  • Decorations – Make sure your decorations are flame resistant, and reconsider those that could catch on fire, even if it completes the room. Avoid sharp or breakable decorations, and decorations with long strings or cords.
  • Toy Safety – Be sure to read the instructions before buying toys. The ‘choke hazard’ caution statements on the back of toys are there for a reason.
  • Company and Visitors – Don’t wait until the next day to clean up after a party. Just get the cleaning over with so that you could rest sooner, and so your toddlers won’t choke on leftover food or get their hands on any alcohol.
