Parenting is a funny thing. It can turn something you do daily but normally don’t think much about (like brushing your teeth) into something that’s… foreign, as if you’ve never done it before.

That’s understandable, because you want to make sure nothing bad happens to your baby.

Below are a few facts about oral hygiene that will hopefully ease your worries about how and when you should start brushing your toddler’s teeth…

  • Tooth decay is a term that basically means bacteria eating away at the tooth enamel, leading to decay. Bacteria that causes tooth decay thrive on sugar, so lay off the sweets!
  • There is no link between breastfeeding and cavities.
  • Start brushing when your baby grows his or her first tooth, even if you are mainly bottle feeding him or her.
  • Children under 2 years old should not use fluoride toothpaste. Ask your child’s pediatrician for more information.
  • The more natural ingredients in a toothpaste, the better it is for both you and your baby.

What did your baby’s pediatrician say about what to do and what not to do when it comes to brushing your baby’s teeth (or tooth)? Any interesting teeth brushing stories?
