If your kids tell you they’re hearing voices, most likely there is nothing to worry about.
According to a study that looked at 3,870 Groningen (The Netherlands) kids ages 7-9 years, only 1 in 10 of those kids said they hear voices.
Hearing voices that aren’t really there may be a sign of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, but most children who hear voices when they are young aren’t that affected.
“These voices in general have a limited impact in daily life,” says Agna A. Bartels-Velthuis of University Medical Center Groningen.
Indeed only 19% of the 9% that answered yes to hearing voices are actually affected by the voices. Girls tend to be more affected than boys.
When your kids’ behaviors are different, when they’re not acting “normal,” that’s when you should seek help. Otherwise, the voices will most likely come, then go for good.
Have your kids ever told you that they hear voices that aren’t really there? Which voices and what did they say to your kids? Did this pass or did you get help?
