If you had the opportunity to choose the sex of your baby, would you?
If someone asked me whether I would want a boy or a girl after I get married, I’d say: boy for sure.
What I really mean is, it’d be nice to have a boy but I’d be equally happy with a girl.
I wonder if people mean it when they say they want a boy or a girl. Because if they really do mean it, around $18,000 will get them their boy, or their girl.
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a technique used to improve the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and birth for infertile couples, and for couples who have a high risk of passing on a genetic disease to their offspring.
According to CNN, PGD technology can also allow people underoing in-vitro fertilization (where eggs are fertilized outside of the womb) to choose the “sex” of the embryo.
So, now that you know this is possible, would you choose your child’s biological sex? Is this ethical?
Some argue that this is just another reproductive choice for women, and others believe choosing a child’s sex is unnatural.
What do you argue?
Would You Choose Your Child’s Gender? [CNN]
Note: The CNN article uses the term “gender,” which is incorrect. Gender is a social construction. A person can be biologically female, but may identify as a man. The CNN article deals with biological sexual orientation, not the social aspect of gender. The more politically correct term to use is “sex,” which is the term I’ll be using in my article below.
