Crying Baby: Could It Be Colic?

by Hong Kong Tran on January 6, 2010

Does it seem like your baby never stops crying?

Babies cry all the time…

But your baby REALLY cries all the time.

I’m talking about the type of crying that goes for more than 3 hours a day, at least 3 days a week.

If you’ve done everything you could possibly think of to relieve the crying (your baby is fed, healthy, etc.), and your baby is STILL crying, he or she may have colic, which is believed to affect 20% of babies.

That’s a lot of babies and a lot of crying.

Unfortunately, researchers can’t exactly pin-point a cause for colic. This means there isn’t really a definitive solution for it.

If you’re wondering if your baby has colic, here are some symptoms to check for:

  • Crying that lasts 3+ hours a day, 3+ days a week
  • Cold feet (literally)
  • A red face
  • Difficulty falling and staying asleep
  • Legs may be pulled up to the stomach, then fully stretched

The good news is that colic usually passes after your baby is 3-4 months with no long-term problems.

For my neice (whenever I am around her…we just start singing as a family) it almost always stops her crying. The fun part is seeing what song comes out. Everyone just joins in whether they know it or not. “Mississippi Moon” by the Doobie Brothers seemed to work well over the holidays.

The other thing to do is just open up the freezer and stand there looking in. The change in temp or something made her stop crying. **Don’t put the baby in though. :)

Oh the power of togetherness. The singing is a good tip – you have to stop the crying anyway, so why not make it a fun thing to do? Thanks for the input and happy new year!

Carrying my baby in a sling helped tremendously. But I did a lot of reading on the topic and compiled a list of baby colic remedies. It might be useful for other parents:
