Autism is a genetic disorder. If a child is autistic, he or she may have problems with communication, socialization, and even imagination.
Males are 4 times more likely to have autism than females. Autistic kids generally don’t make eye contact, and they’re socially awkward and rude.
So now that you know what autism is, is there a way to prevent it?
Not so far…
But, you can prevent some risks that are associated with autism…
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that children who are born premature or underweight have a higher risk of developing autism that’s nearly double the rate of those born full-term at a normal, healthy weight.
You can prevent low birth weight and early delivery (in some cases) with early, thorough prenatal medical care.
Studies also show that medical conditions like tuberous sclerosis, congenital rubella syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and untreated phenylketonuria are linked to an increased risk for autism.
Of these conditions, treatment of phenylketonuria may help lower the risk of developing autism.
Taking care of your baby needs to start before birth, so make sure you are not exposed to drugs like thalidomide during pregnancy, which is often associated with an increased risk of giving birth to an autistic child.
Autism or no autism, it’s always important for mothers to practice healthy choices before and during pregnancy.
There is no concrete evidence that something is the cause of autism, but it doesn’t hurt to be healthy all around.
