Family Mottos

by Hong Kong Tran

Some families have mottos to help them focus on what's most important.

Has your family ever thought about coming up with a family motto?

It’s an interesting idea. The fact that everyone in the family lives by that motto is one thing, but applying the motto to the outside world is another thing, and oftentimes that can be very rewarding.

“Big Takes Care of Little” is one example. A blogger on InspiringMoms.com shares how her family motto helped her kids learn to be helpful inside and outside of the family…

In finding out about Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, this mom had her kids donated stuffed animals to a local organization, which in turn distributed the toys to the children in New Orleans.

If we as parents plant this seed early in the lives of our children, and nurture it, we are likely to raise compassionate kids who feel empowered and believe that they can and will make a difference in both their life and the lives of others. Their efforts matter.

Your family can do the same for the children and families in Haiti. Come up with a motto and apply it. Acts of charity that draw on a strong foundation such as a motto will make your kids feel a connection to what they’re doing.

Try it and tell us how it goes!
