Parents are learning how to approach their teens about drug use.
I can’t talk about high school without talking about drugs…and how drugs and drinking were such a big part of so many of my friends’ lives.
Kids would smoke weed before class and their eyes would be bloodshot red.
My friends would hide their alcohol bottles in brown paper bags, stash them in their lockers, and then take them out at lunch time.
They would talk about what happened last weekend, naming alcohol and substances I’ve never even heard of.
It was like they were talking in code.
An intervention Dr. Phil did with a teen addict reveals some insightful tips to get you into the loop if you suspect that your child is using drugs and/or drinking alcohol.
Be weary of some of the tips, though. Dr. Phil seems to encourage that invading your child’s privacy is O.K.
As a parent it’s important that you set a good example for your children, and being judgmental or too nosey is not really something you want them to learn.
And with this suggestion:
Give your kids a random drug test. Make sure it’s after a weekend.
Not true!
Kids don’t just do drugs on a weekend. In fact, it makes more sense that they do it during the week, when parents are at work for most of the day.
Always follow your gut, but you can start by taking a look at the 15 tips Dr. Phil compiled after the intervention he did with the teen addict he helped.
