Full-Time Parenting During An Illness

by Hong Kong Tran

It's important for parents to make sure they stay healthy.

Can you imagine taking on your full-time job as a stay-at-home parent AND being sick or ill at the same time?

For stay-at-home parents, being sick almost isn’t even an option. There’s so much to take care of around the house already – how can you take care of yourself, too?

We can’t all be Superpeople, but it’s very possible to keep at your work as a stay-at-home parent and take care of yourself at the same time.

Here are 6 ways you can tackle those two jobs at the same time…

  1. Re-prioritize the to-do list (Is going shopping a priority? Not really. Getting better should be on that priority list
  2. Know your limits and set realistic goals
  3. Have hands-on activities available for your kids
  4. Be flexible (as in, you can lift some of the house rules if you feel that you need to)
  5. Know when to seek help
  6. Stay on the road to recovery

Of the six, I think #5 is one of the more important tips. Sometimes you can’t take care of everything by yourself, and that’s OK! We all need help once in a while. Over-exerting yourself may take you even longer to get well again. Get help if you need it. Have some numbers ready, and perhaps teach your kids to call those numbers, too.

How do you get through being a stay-at-home parent and being sick at the same time? What gets you through those frustrating and stressful times?
