Getting the Wiggles Out Before Lunch

by Hong Kong Tran

Do you think it's better for kids to be active before or after they eat?

Back when I was in elementary school, recess came after lunch. I never really wondered why. Maybe school administrators wanted kids to do the work first (eat) then play later.

But some schools are now trying a new approach. It’s recess first, then lunch.

Schools that implement this schedule see many benefits of letting kids play first, then eat afterward. Kids are wasting less food (because they’re not rushing their eating to play), have better appetites, and show better behaviors in the class room after lunch. (Maybe it’s because of food coma!)

There’s another plus-side to the recess-first strategy: it’s better that kids run around and exercise before they eat, not after. In fact, I’ve heard that rigorous activity after a meal is actually bad for the body.

Which order do you think is better? Recess before or after lunch? How is the recess schedule are your kids’ schools?
