Helping Your Kids Adjust When Things Are Changing

by Hong Kong Tran

In the midst of change, it's good to make sure some things stay constant.

In the midst of change, it's important to keep certain things constant for your kids.

Change is inevitable.

And it doesn’t matter if the change happening in your family is considered “good” or “bad”…

Change can be hard on everyone in the family…especially your kids.

That’s why it’s important to create stability even when things are changing.

How can you do it?

One way to create a sense of stability in your family is to create special family traditions.

These don’t have to be extravagant – they can be as simple as taking a few seconds to have a morning family hug session, or taking a few minutes before dinner to give each family member a compliment.

Mimi Doe of SpiritualParenting.com notices that children who grew up partaking of meaningful family traditions “have a sense of spirituality and wonder, a connection with nature, and a strong relationship with their families.”

This could be a description of your kids if you begin your own family traditions.

When I was younger, one tradition that I clearly remember being a part of is telling each family member good night before bed, and letting them know (verbally) that I loved each of them. It was nothing big and it didn’t take much time to do, but it reinforced our love for one another.
