Many teens in their rebellious stage don’t want to have anything to do with their parents.
That’s just how they are…
The last thing they want to talk to you (the mother) about is sex, or “the talk.”
A survey by O and Seventeen magazines shows that “teens that have had ‘the talk’ [with their mothers] are half as likely to get pregnant, are more likely to practice safe sex and have fever regrets about sex.”
That means talking to your teen daughters makes a difference! And it’s better than letting your friends hear the news from their friends who are probably just as clueless as they are.
Here are 2 big tips for taking on “the talk” with your daughter:
- Study up on sex. Yes, it can be awkward, but you’re a grown-up and it’s important that you actually know what you’re talking to when you’re informing your teens about the importance of waiting to have sex, or practicing safer sex.
- Stay calm and don’t lecture. You want your teens to actually listen to what you have to say, don’t you? Don’t just lay out the points and expect them follow. “The talk” should be held in a style where there is room for questions, comments, and concerns.
Do you, as a parent, find it difficult to give your teens “the talk?” How do you make “the talk” easier for both parties?
