As a parent you’re always worrying about whether your kids are going to grow up with a kind heart, among other things. Teaching your kids empathy isn’t something you can accomplish in just a few steps–it takes years, but it’s definitely doable.
I know that Valentine’s Day was just over a week ago, but according to Michele Borba, parenting author and educational psychologist, Valentine’s Day could be a 365-day affair…not in terms of the candies and cards, but the spirit of the holiday.
Borba gives 5 “simple secrets” that will help your child grow up to be kind-hearted, caring individuals…
- Help your child recognize different emotional states by pointing out other kids’ countenances, postures and mannerisms.
- You’ve heard the cliche “Put yourself in someone else’s shoes.” Well, have your child put himself or herself in another person’s shoes to get them to feel the other side.
- Have your child imagine someone else’s feelings to help them understand what other people are going through.
- Teach by example, as in set an example for your child by being caring yourself.
- Reason with your child about his or her uncaring behavior…sometimes all you may need is good moral discipline to get your child to understand and realize others’ feelings.
Are you raising kind-hearted kids? Did you use any of these tips to accomplish that?
