Is the iPad For You and Your Kids?

by Hong Kong Tran on February 3, 2010

Parents are discussing the usefulness of the new iPad for their kids.

New products are introduced everyday, and for some reason parents tend to freak out…

Take the newly launched Apple iPad, for example. Immediately following the introduction of the iPad, critics come out from nowhere and jump on technology’s case, arguing that the product is harming teens.

I can understand why some parents may think that the iPad isn’t right for teens because it takes time away from the family, because they have yet another piece of equipment to occupy their time. But first admit that you are now living in a world dominated by technology. Instead of always being against new products such as the iPad, be open about it, because it actually does offer your teens many useful features that they can use in school, like…

  • Organized note-taking feature
  • Calendar feature
  • Easy access to iTunes, YouTube, pictures
  • Can be used as a digital photo frame
  • Book reader feature

I personally don’t like the idea of a book reader feature, because it takes away from the very essence of what college is all about.

The iPad costs between $499-$829. Asking whether the iPad is right for your teen is like asking if the iPhone is right…it’s not something you should be focusing on. Instead, ask if your teen needs it. And if your teen really wants this product, suggest that he or she pays for the bulk of it, and you can help out with a fraction of the cost.

What do you think of the new iPad? Is it something you’d want your teens to have?
