How do your kids respond to their emotions?
Let’s face it. We now live in a world where emotions and feelings are widely expressed through impersonal means.
It’s all about text messaging, instant messaging, e-mailing. And online social networks like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, are a big hit with kids (and a growing number of adults!)
Feeling particularly happy? Update your Facebook status. Mad at someone? There’s no need to call – just send a text message.
Sometimes these ways are much quicker and much easier. You don’t have to physically meet with the other person to talk.
So, it’s no surprise that many kids today can’t identify emotions in other people. What’s problematic is that many more can’t physically express their own emotions.
Does this sound like your child?
According to Michele Borba, author of The Big Book of Parenting Solutions, kids today need to be educated on how to recognize emotions, and how to act on them.
One way to increase sensitivity in your children is to praise them when they show sensitivity and kindness. It’s really that simple.
