It's important to be extra cautious during the holidays.
When it comes to your family, especially at the holidays, you can never be too safe…
And although holiday decorations are supposed to be fun and festive, they can also bring extra fire hazards to your family.
Corning Fire Chief Steve Monroe gives some useful tips on how to keep your family safe this season. Here are just a few related to Christmas Trees, candles, and pine needles…
- If you decide on having a live Christmas tree, make sure it’s fresh. To test for freshness, knock the base of the tree against the ground. Lots of shedding needles means the tree isn’t fresh.
- Keep live Christmas trees away from heat sources to keep the tree from drying.
- Don’t use candles on Christmas trees. Duh, right? According to Monroe, “[t]here are still people that try it.”
It doesn’t take very long to make sure your holiday decorations don’t pose a fire threat, but even if it does, at least being extra careful will keep your house from burning down…
