Are you a Mom or Dad who overparents?
A recent TIME article highlights that the phenomenon (or what I would call “disease”) of overparenting is an old one. There’s always been the worry that children would become corrupt if parents didn’t monitor their children’s every action.
And so overparenting (obsessing about kids’ safety and success) became the norm, and anything else was considered deviant.
When it gets to this point, you know something has gone wrong – and something has to change.
So here are some tips to keep in mind about overparenting:
- Mistakes are a good thing, believe it or not
- Part of what parenting means is learning to let go – you can’t be a helicopter parent hovering over your child forever (I love that phrase: helicopter parent)
- Every family is different, so find the formula that fits your own family – don’t blindly listen to what the media suggests as good parenting.
Do you know some parents who overparent their kids? What advice do you have for them? And what do you think about this backlash against overparenting? Has it really gone too far? Sound off in the comments.
