Are you sure she's getting the right message when you spank her?

Some people say kids are like sponges. They seem to suck up new behaviors, movements, and words from the people around them and then repeat those new actions. You’ve seen this, right?

After watching Kung-Fu Panda, your little one might be karate chopping his way through the house instead of walking to his bedroom like he used to. Or your 6-year-old might come home from school repeating a “less-than-polite” phrase that you wind up calling her teacher about.

Not only do kids tend to act on what they see other people around them doing, but they gather meaning from these actions too. This is especially important to keep in mind when…

you’re thinking of consequences for your kids. Is the consequence or form of punishment conveying what you want it to convey?

Some parents believe that spanking will prevent the unwanted behavior from happening again. It may in the short term, but what’s the long-term message it’s giving your kids? What is it teaching them about how to solve problems? And is it really helping them correct their behavior in the future?

Kathyrn Kvols at Positive Parenting shares this:

The latest research from Dr. Murray Strauss at the Family Research Laboratory affirms that spanking teaches children to use acts of aggression and violence to solve their problems. It only teaches and perpetuates more violence, the very thing our society is so concerned about. This research further shows that children who have been spanked are more prone to low self-esteem, depression and accept lower paying jobs as adults.

Her article goes on to share 9 alternatives to spanking your kids so that you can prevent the above from happening to your child. What healthy alternatives to spanking do you use in your family?
