A study by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Liberty Mutual Group reveals that 45% of high school teens say their parents allow them to drink at home.
Almost 33% of high school teens say their parents let them drink on special occasions.
We’re in the middle of one of those special occasions: the holidays.
Parents think letting their teens drink at home will deter their decisions to drink elsewhere.
Some parents also think that this kind of leniency is teaching their teens how to drink responsibly.
Yeah, right. Think again, parents.
This is what the study shows…
According to the same study, 57% of high school teens who say their parents let them drink at home reveal that they also drink with their friends, outside of the home.
Teens take advantage of their parents’ letting them drink. They think, “My parents let me drink at home so they probably won’t be too mad if I drink without their supervision…as long as I’m being responsible.”
Parents, if you haven’t noticed, a teenager’s definition of “responsibility” is entirely different from your definition.
Further research reveals that by their senior year in high school, more than 4 in 5 teens are drinking.
That number scares me, and it should scare you, too.
The adolescent stage is when teens’ brains are rapidly developing. Why would some parents want to kill their teens’ brains even before they’ve fully grown?
I just don’t understand. Do you?
As a parent, do you agree that parents who let their teens drink are irresponsible? If you don’t agree, what are your reasons?
