Moms: were you forbidden to eat or drink while you were in labor? Were you told that eating or drinking could cause foods from your stomach to travel into the lungs while you are under genera anesthesia?
Well, the next time the nurses give you looks for eating a snack as you get to the hospital, don’t feel bad if you give them the look.
A new study suggests that you actually can eat if you’re in labor.
Some hospitals have lifted restrictions on drinking during labor, while keeping the restrictions on eating solid foods.
Only about 1-2% of women in labor are given general anesthesia. Most are given regional anesthesia, so even if you do eat, researchers say that the risks are relatively low when it comes to Mendelson’s syndrome.
Ask your doctor if he or she suggests not to eat during labor.
In the meantime, don’t feel like you can’t snack, but consult experts in your area just in case.
