Specific Parenting Advice Isn’t Always Best

by Hong Kong Tran

What parts of parenting do you focus most on?

Everyday you come across tips on the specifics: how to deal with angry children, fun things to do with the family, 5 things you need to know about this and that.

Once in a while it’s useful to focus on more of the general, big picture stuff. This way, as you’re dealing with specifics, there’s always a goal that you’re working towards when it comes to parenting.

Oprah.com gives 9 ways that you can create your own “Strong Life Plan,” including a suggestion to focus on one or two things that your kids are good at (rather than aiming for perfection in everything), and to love them.

This is the best one, I think:

Don’t worry about them so much. They will be far better served by your belief in their abilities than by your belief in their fallibility.

Children feel what you feel. If you worry about them, they’ll be worried, too. You want to be a supportive and encouraging parent, so give them a little more faith, because they can do it. You know this, so let them know it, too.

Visit the link below for more ways you can lead a strong life for the entire family.

What’s a general tip that you have come across and have used in your parenting methods that really helped you to become a better parent, and that has helped your children lead their own strong lives?
