Just Parenting Advice has published quite a few posts on college, from tips on how to get into college to alternate post-high school routes.
But what if, after getting into college, your teen wants to drop out? What if you can’t persuade your teen to stay in college?
Here are some motivating news for you…
Many college drop-outs are now some of the most famous celebrities. Here are some names you may recognize…
Lady Gaga, the pop star; and Ellen Degeneres, the Emmy award-winning talk show host; and James Cameron, director of Titanic and Avatar.
Mark Zuckerberg, creator of Facebook, which is currently the largest social networking site on the web, dropped out of Harvard University.
Whether you care about what these individuals do is besides the point. Hopefully this information serves to encourage you to not give up on your college drop-out. Hopefully you understand that your teen can still make something of his or her decision.
I’m not trying to say that in order for your kids to be famous they would have to drop out of college. Musicians like Matt Scannell and Keith Kane from Vertical Horizon, the band with the most-played single in 2000, both graduated from Georgetown University. The point is, always be encouraging and don’t stop believing in your kids.
They could be the next Tim O’Brien or Toni Morrison or Bill Gates. You never know…
Is your child thinking about dropping out of college? What prompted that decision, and do you approve?

College is too much and I’m not content with it, I’m actually quite miserable while accumulating gratuitous debt. I film skateboarding and I even took a year off before I wound up going to an art school for film. I made sure I was making a solid decision. All I wanna do is travel and film and miraculously while after being in college for almost a year my friends have gone all across the country and even invited me to come, but I’ve had to say, “Go figure, now I’ve paid for the year and I can’t leave.” I hate it here, and all my friends are living it up. I am learning things here but it isn’t worth the money. I want out but, I’m afraid that once I decide to leave that I am going to have 6 months to travel/ find a job and then I’m gonna be stuck like a married man. Married to my tuition bills/crappy job. I was planning on getting a crappy job out of college anyway. My big question is… what is the minimum payment I can pay on my student loans while still traveling/ maybe not having a job?
