Parents are learning how to save time and money on their kids' lunches.

It’s something most us do every day…

Eat lunch.

But when you do something every day that involves using materials and resources (like food!) it can get expensive.

Here are some things we learned from Tash Hughes about how you can make your dollar go a lot farther when you’re packing lunches…

  1. Say goodbye to brown paper bags and plastic zip-loc bags and opt for lunch boxes and small reusable containers with lids. You’ll invest some money up front, but it will be a financial savings over time. Plus it’s better for the environment.
  2. Plan ahead. By putting extras from your dinner into the small containers that evening, you’ll be all set for having a lunch of leftovers the following day.
  3. Bake ahead. Yes, if you make a bunch of food or baked goods in one afternoon, you can put those items in the freezer (already in the small containers that fit in the lunch boxes) and then have them ready to go at a moment’s notice when it’s time to pack lunches.
  4. Buy In Bulk: Instead of going for those tiny snack packs with fruit cocktail in them, buy a big batch of fruit salad and then portion it out yourself into your little containers with lids.
