Have today’s girls become more like boys?
A blog on Cafe Mom claims: yes, today’s girls have become boys. I say absolutely not!
What does it mean to be boy-like anyway? The writer claims that if you swear, get drunk, punch or hit, don’t have manners, then you are a boy. According to her, girls are supposed to have manners, refrain from swearing, and in general, just be feminine.
Well, I have guy friends who don’t drink, don’t punch, have manners–does this mean that he isn’t a boy?
There’s a big problem when people begin to generalize gender roles, when they say that boys are supposed act this way and girls are supposed to act that way. We live in the 21st century, when gender ideologies are no longer static. This is important to let your kids know.
Telling your daughter that she has become a boy (especially if your daughter is still at an age where she doesn’t yet understand gender roles and behavior) if she lacks manners, is swearing, punching or hitting could send her confusing messages that she may learn the hard way later on.
If you don’t like how your daughter is behaving, target those specific behaviors, not your daughter!
Do you agree? Or do you think that today’s girls ARE becoming boys (if that’s even correct to say…)?
