Do your kids come home from school and raid the refrigerator and cupboards for after-school snacks?
I know I did (and still do!).
After a long, oftentimes stressful, day at school, it’s nice to relax with a light snack. There’s no problem in snacking, except when the snacks are actually unhealthy junk foods like cookies, chips, and candy.
Here are 5 after-school snacks that Lisa Cain, Ph.D., suggests you prepare for your kids…
1. LARABAR
Now I have never heard of this snack before, but apparently they are made of dates and cashews, are light and small and contains only a handful of ingredients.
2. “Ants on a Log”
Spread peanut butter or cream cheese on a celery stick and top it off with some raisins. I’m not so convinced that peanut butter and cream cheese are healthy alternatives to other types of junk food…
3. Dark chocolate covered raisins
According to Cain, both these ingredients are “healthy.” Just because chocolate is made from plants doesn’t mean it’s healthy for kids. I’d still say chocolate-covered raisins are junk food…
4. Mini pizzas
These are actually crackers with pizza sauce and cheese, heated in the toaster or microwave.
5. Plain yogurt with jam
