Your son has a fever. Should you take him to the hospital?
“Uh-oh. Aaron has a fever. Could it be swine flu?”
Parents are thinking things like this – that’s for sure. They’ve heard on the news that 30,000 to 90,000 people could die this year from the swine flu, also known as H1N, and those numbers sound scary. What if their kid is one of those 30,000?
What most parents don’t know is that…
40,000 people usually die each year from the regular, plain ol’ version the flu that we’re all used to dealing with already.
But because they don’t want to take any chances, many parents are rushing off to their nearest hospital emergency room to get their kids checked out when there’s the slightest indication of illness in their kids.

Showing up at your doctor’s office without calling ahead can actually put your child at greater risk for getting sicker because you’ll be exposing your child to lots of other kids who are (and have been) spreading germs and viruses in the waiting room. Ick.
