Are you anticipating your college kid's return this holiday?
Oh boy! Your kids are coming home from college to spend Thanksgiving with you?
Well, don’t get too excited yet.
Most college students, especially freshman coming home for the first time since being away, won’t spend much time at home with you at all. They’ll be out and about meeting up with old friends and asserting their new-found independence.
The University of California is so familiar with this phenomenon that they actually have an article on their website prepping parents with what to expect when their freshman sons and daughters come home for the holidays.
This tip from their article best sums up their suggestions:
You have a right to insist on consideration and you have a right to insist that your child doesn’t do anything unsafe or stupid–but remember that your child now makes most daily decisions for themselves, and things won’t go well if you try to take that away.
What do you think? Should college students coming home for the holidays be expected to spend most of their time with their families? Sound off in the comments.
Planning to spend loads of time with your college freshman home for Thanksgiving? Well, don’t. [WashingtonPost]
