When Your Teen Doesn’t Respect You

by Hong Kong Tran

Some teenagers give their parents little or no respect.

So many articles out there say that in order for you to get respect from your teens, you have to first give them respect.

But after giving that a try, you find that it doesn’t really work the way you wanted it to, right?

Here’s an idea that you might have dismissed because it’s so obvious (which, in a way, makes it novel): respect yourself.

Don’t let your teens walk all over you. They may be somewhat naive, but they can take advantage of you.

You don’t have to give up and take their disrepectful behavior.

When you allow your teens to be rude to you, you’re not letting yourself have the respect you deserve…

So here’s what to do instead…

Firmly let them know that if they don’t stop doing something you disapprove of, they won’t be allowed to go out with their friends.

Parent coach, Barbara Desmarais suggests:

Remember to keep your boundaries clear. You have a right to establish guidelines and ensure they’re followed. For example you can say: “I will not tolerate the “f” word used in this house.” If you’ve driven your teen somewhere and they walk out of the car without thanking you, you can say: “When I drive you places, I expect you to say thank-you.” Or, if they’re being blatantly rude and disrespectful you can say: “If you continue to talk to me that way, you may not go out tonight.” You also have the right to say: “I don’t like the way you’re talking to me right now and if you continue, I will not drive you anywhere tonight.”

You can certainly give them respect, too. You’re not giving in by respecting them, don’t worry. You’re simply acknowledging that your teens are not just your kids – they’re people too.
