Does having more kids make parents happier?

In a study headed by sociology professor Hans-Peter Kohler of the University of Pennsylvania he explored the degree of happiness experienced by women without kids, women with one child, and women with 2 or more kids.

He also studied the affects having kids had on men.

Some of these statistics may surprise you. Maybe others will have you nodding your head in agreement saying to yourself, “That makes sense…”

Which finding is most surprising to you?

  • Men enjoy an almost 75 percent larger happiness boost from a firstborn son than from a firstborn daughter.
  • Women with at least one child are 20% happier than their counter-parts who don’t have kids.
  • Women with 2 or more children are less happy than women with only 1 child.
  • Women with 2 or more children are still happier than women without any kids.

In the full article from Psychology Today, you’ll find more details about these stats above and the study that was done.

But before you run off and read more about the study, let’s do a little informal poll here…

How many kids do you have and how happy are you on a scale of 1-10?

How happy do you think you are compared to your friends with more or fewer children than you have?
