Prenatal Massage 101: Techniques to Soothe Your Pregnant Partner

Prenatal massage can be helpful in easing the muscular and skeletal strain that pregnant women feel as they give birth to a baby. Most massages require two people — the masseur and the massagee. For many mothers-to-be, especially during a pandemic, there are two people who can do a massage: the masseur and the massagee. Prenatal massage can help with minor discomforts and other worrying but typical body changes during pregnancy. It also builds intimacy and connection between fathers and unborn children.

Prenatal massage therapist Sara Lyon, founder and CEO of Glow Birth & Body prenatal masseuses, says that mothers-to be can and should get a massage as soon as they are pregnant.

Lyon states that meditation and massage are two of the best ways to prepare for childbirth and labor. It teaches you how to deal with discomfort and how to bend under pressure. It teaches you how to use your mind, breath and body to overcome obstacles. This is something you will do daily with your two-year old.

Prenatal Massage Prep: Set the Mood and Get to Work

Prenatal massage is very simple. Establish the scene, communicate and then get to work.

Relax first. Your partner, not you. Lyon says that the most important thing about doing good bodywork is that it should be as easy as possible for the person doing it to relax. Don’t think about it too much. Touch is generally a good feeling.

You only need your hands to create a relaxing environment. Lyon explains that your tools are your hands and elbows, as well as your forearms. Apply pressure to the juicy, delicious areas of her body. The least pressure will be applied by your hands. Your elbows and forearms will feel medium pressure.

You can also skip oils and lotions. Fear of making mistakes in massage techniques can make oils difficult to use. It is unlikely that the hospital will allow couples to bring their techniques into the delivery area.

Men must bring curiosity to prenatal massage sessions. Lyon says, “You’re going learn about your partner’s body.” “Don’t be afraid.”

Prenatal Massage Techniques

Technique 1: Double Hip Squeeze

This technique does not require any type of dynamic movement. Simply apply pressure.

Standing or sitting on an exercise ball, the pregnant woman leans forward at her waist. Her upper body is supported by a table, counter or high bed. Her partner is standing behind her and places his hands on her hips. He presses inwardly, pressing the hips together.

Lyon says that it transforms a lot of the soft tissues structures that are crucial to pregnancy. It helps with hip pain, sciatic discomfort, and lower back.

Technique 2: Shake The Tree

Shake the tree is more dynamic than the double hip squeeze. It shares the standing start position of the previous technique. This technique relies more on movement than pressure.

The partner places his hands on one side of the pregnant woman’s thighs and supports her upper body on a firm surface. The partner then gently “shakes” or “churns the thigh, rolling the muscle back-and-forth between his hands almost like he is trying to light a fire with a log. It is important to gently roll the muscles around in the direction of the femur’s axis.

Lyon explains that these muscles begin at the pelvis. This technique also relaxes the ligaments, pelvic floor, and back.

Technique 3: Lower Back Stroke

The woman leans forward again. The partners should then move their hands from the woman’s mid- to lower back to her tailbone. The stroke should be completed by the partners. They should drag their hands until they drop off the body.

Technique 4: Tailbone Press

Imagine that there are dots along the spine from the top to the base of the tailbone. The partner should support the mom-to-be’s upper body and lean forward.

Lyon gives some suggestions for prenatal massage practitioners near you if these techniques seem too difficult. She says, “You need to find a specialist.” People are nervous about the treatment of pregnant women, so it is possible to end up spending a lot more on moisturizing than a good massage.

  • Doulas are often the best people to contact for prenatal massage. They should be able either to refer or offer the treatment.
  • Do not trust massage practitioners who have negative reviews.
  • You can search for keywords. Prenatal massage practitioners are highly rated, and often mention prenatal massage.

Lyon points out that no matter how couples approach it, the connection built through massage will help dads be more productive during labor. She says, “If you have been doing this and communicating your body feelings up to labor, then you are already speaking that language.” “Physically as well as verbally.”
